By Hans den Hartog Jager
Vivian Ammerlaan (1994) is the winner of the John & Marine van Vlissingen Art Foundation Prize 2025. As part of the prize, she traveled to the Rocky Mountains in Canada and the US, looking for inspiration for new work.
Her photographic oeuvre revolves around fictional landscapes, in which she combines digital and experimental analog techniques. Vivian wants to translate the grandeur, silence, and emptiness of the landscape into images that evoke feelings and memories. She is not concerned with an exact representation, but with what the landscape triggers in her. Vivian creates dreamlike worlds and landscapes that exist only in our desires. In an age when the world has been completely mapped, she is drawn to the remote and undiscovered. This book tells the story of her journey, sources of inspiration, and new work, written by Hans den Hartog Jager.
